PORTLAND, Maine –
Summers for Congress today gained the endorsement of the Sportsman's Alliance of Maine (SAM).
"We are pleased to receive the endorsement of SAM," said Ruth Summers, wife of Charlie Summers, candidate for US Congress. "Charlie's proven support of sportsmen as a State Senator and his commitment to preserving access to public lands is important for the conservation of wildlife resources in Maine."
"As a State Senator, you were an outstanding leader for the sportsmen of Maine. We appreciated your support, and we return that support to you today," said George Smith in a letter received by the campaign. "You earned SAM's endorsement in this race."
Charlie Summers served two terms as a State Senator representing Saco, Old Orchard Beach, Scarborough and Dayton area and worked closely with SAM and its membership. As a member of the Inland Fisheries and Wildlife Committees, Charlie proved his staunch support of SAM by working with SAM leadership on numerous issues - most notably co-sponsoring legislation that established the loon license plate.
Summers fully and unequivocally supports our Constitutional right to "keep and bear arms" and will take that belief with him to Washington. Summers will work tirelessly for preserving public access to private land, the rights of ATV owners and riders, gun safety for children and teenagers and ensuring the sanctity of the rights of Maine's outdoorsmen throughout the state.
The Sportsman's Alliance of Maine is Maine's largest sportsmen's organization with a full-time headquarters and staff in Augusta. SAM's staff works at the Legislature, state agencies and other forums on critical issues.
Charlie Summers is currently serving in Iraq, as a Lieutenant Commander in the United States Navy. In 2004, Summers was the GOP nominee in Maine's First District Congressional race, securing a higher percentage of the vote than any previous challenger to Democratic incumbent Tom Allen. He previously served as the New England Regional Administrator for the U.S. Small Business Administration, State Director for U.S. Senator Olympia J. Snowe (R-Maine), and as a 2-term member of the Maine State Senate representing Saco, Scarborough, Dayton and Old Orchard Beach.
