PORTLAND, Maine – Summers for Congress today gained the support and leadership of yet another Maine public servant and established member of the community. The Honorable Philip E. Harriman, business leader and former State Senator, announced he is eager to utilize his business and public service experiences to assist Charlie Summers in becoming Maine’s next Congressman from the 1st District.

“I’m honored to serve as Campaign Chairman of Summers for Congress,” said Harriman. “Over the next 9 months our team will show Maine’s First District why Charlie should be elected to U.S. Congress. His patriotism, leadership, and lifetime of results have convinced me that Charlie is the most qualified candidate to represent Maine’s 1st District. He has shown time and time again he is connected to the aspirations of Maine’s people, and will bring Maine and our country the wisdom it needs to prepare for the future.”

In addition to his four consecutive terms representing the 23rd District in the Maine State Senate, Harriman has a national reputation for his expertise in advising family-held businesses, retirement planning, business succession planning and estate planning. Harriman has been in the financial services profession since 1978. Currently he is a partner at the firm Lebel & Harriman LLP, insurance and investment firm and a registered representative of Valmark Securities.

Harriman serves as Past President of the Million Dollar Round Table, an international association of life insurance agents. He has also been a board member of numerous organizations, including Mid Coast Health Services, Husson College and Ingraham.

Charlie Summers is currently serving in Iraq, as a Lieutenant Commander in the United States Navy. In 2004, Summers was the GOP nominee in Maine’s First District Congressional race, securing a higher percentage of the vote than any previous challenger to Democratic incumbent Tom Allen. He previously served as the New England Regional Administrator for the U.S. Small Business Administration, State Director for U.S. Senator Olympia J. Snowe (R-Maine), and as a 2-term member of the Maine State Senate representing Saco, Scarborough and Old Orchard Beach.
